TWIGGS COUNTY GEORGIA, 1836 14 November JOHN HAWTHORN applied UNABLE TO READ THIS LINE and, MADE STATEMENT - DECLARATION IN ORDER TO RECEIVE BENEFIT of Act of Congress Passed June 8, 1832, That General Washington ordered a requisition of men from DUPLIN COUNTY; that a sufficient quantity of men, as volunteers was taken from Col Kenans regiment, said county and that this deponent was on that after volunteering in the militia of Duplin Co the company was marched to Kingston under Capt Walls, that at Kingston the company was put under Capt George Ferrigood and by him were marched to Hillsborough, at headquarters, when the company drew arms, at Hillsborough the company was to be put under Capt Rainford, but he was taken sick and the company was put under Capt Maben -- the company staid at Hillsboro about two months, as near as recollected, when General Washington as this deponent was informed, ordered ups Daws Mills on Deep River in North Carolina, that to this place five companies marched under Major Crafton and the Capt of the companys were Capt Maben, Capt Troutman or Lieut Capt Jones, Capt Garden and Capt Ferrigood of the Horse, at Daws Mills, we staid about five or six months, during which time we captured a large number of Tories and also while at Daws Mills, stationed, this deponent under Capt Maben marched to Coxes Mills to encounter Col Fauni, the British service of Tory, but he escaped this mill was in North Carolina, and the Company and stream this deponent does not recollect, at the end of five or six months stationed at Daws Mill orders were received from WASHINGTON TO _UNABLE TO READ_ TO HILLSBOROUGH and from thence to join the main army to encounter Cornwallis.

Lord Cornwallis was taken, after which we were stationed at Hillsborough till the end of 18 months service and then received a written discharge by Capt Maben. The soldier was age 84 in 1836 25 January when he made his original application in Twiggs Co, Georgia States in this that he was born in Duplin County North Carolina 16 August 1752. That he lived in Duplin Co NC when he went into service and has since lived in the counties of COLUMBIA, WARREN, WASHINGTON, WILKS, BALDWIN AND TWIGGS IN GEORGIA. That he lived a few years in ALABAMA, BUTLER COUNTY but has returned and now resides in Twiggs County (GA) that he came from Alabama to the last named county of Twiggs and on a visit to his relations and that here his wife became afflicted and died, that he has abandoned the intention to return to Alabama, that he is old and infirm and is in indigent circumstances as he would not apply for a pension. He knows of no person by whom he ca prove his service but by THOMAS HAWTHORN AND THOMAS McCULLEN whose affidavits are attached. That they are both deceased since taking said affidavits. STATE OF GEORGIA: MARION COUNTY: PERSONALLY APPEARED Thomas Hawthorn who being duly sworn states that John Hawthorn now of unable to read BUTLER CO ALABAMA (DATED AUG 20 1834) states that John Hawthorn served in the Revolutionary War as a volunteer in NC under Capt Raiford and joined headquarters at Hillsboro NC under Maj Crafton, attached to Col Kenan's regiment. That John Hawthorn served 18 months ______unable to read_______
