  • John A. Miles - I am searching for John A. MILES (born July 1816 in Scott co. Ky) and his family who moved to Charleston Il abt 1850 from Ky. He married Julia TROTTER and his known (to me) children were Ellen, Florida, James (all born in Ky), and Belle (1853), Frances and Emma (born in Charleston, IL

In the 1860 census he was a shoe merchant and in the 1870 he was a Post Master.

When I went to Charleston I found John and Julia buried on top of Mound Cemetery next to the founder of the cemtery, John B. HILL, in the MITCHELL plot (their daughter, Florida married Isaac Bennet MITCHELL, and Kate (either John's sister or daughter) married Grenville MITCHELL and is buried there too.

Another daughter married Sam JACKSON, and another H.E. BRADLEY.

Amongst the graves at that cemetery and at another where Abe Lincoln's tutor is buried in the town, I found a number of children of Tarleton MILES (who married Sophie Van Doren). I think he could have been a brother of John's. On the LDS site both have guardians listed instead of parents.

Belle, my grgrandmother, married Thomas Jefferson PLANK, in Platte co, Mo in 1874, and they moved back to Charleston where she had her first 3 boys - William, Bennet (died as infant) and John. Two other sons were born in Mo and Ks . They moved back to Charleston abt 1892-3, abt the time her mother Julia died. Her husband, TJ PLANK had a broom factory there in 1895-6, and Belle died in 1899. From her obituaries we found out the married names of her sisters.

As I know of only one son, James, the name may have died out, as I have been unsuccessful in attempts to find others interested in this line (aside from my 2 cousins). James was also of an age to have fought in the Civil War.

Hope you've heard of these folk in your travels! Phyllis Kirby Forcum - 30 Jun 1999
