"My husband and I bought a house in Cherry Creek from my Grandmother in 1976.    At Christmas this year, we were poking around in the shed and came upon a leather bound book for the Biscuit Mining Company.  These are pay records from 1907-1908. 

 

We were looking through the book, and thought for fun we would look up some of the unusual names on the internet.  We came across a couple of genealogy sites listing a Barney Middlemas, one of the workers at the mine.  I sent the following record to the site owners::

 

Below is the record for Barney Middlemas' employment at the Biscuit Mining Company in Cherry Creek, White Pine County, Nevada.  Hopefully it will help you in some way.  One page does include his signature, so if you are interested in a copy, I would be happy to make one for you.

Barney Middlemas started work as a miner,
 June 24, worked through June 31  as a Miner
        7 days @ $3.50 = 24.50  - 6.30 Board = 18.20 Pay

 

July 1907   July 4th was a 0 hour day for everyone.  No pay for any Miner
 July 1 - 31  30 days @ 3.50 = 105.00  - 31.00 Board = 74.00 Pay

 

August 1907  didn’t work Aug 12th, worked ½ day 13th  ¼ day 30th  
Worked as a Miner  listed in book as    July 23 @.25 cents  = 5.75 and
Aug  28 ¾ days @3.75 = 107.80 - Board @ 25.30 = 88.25 Pay

 

September 1907 didn’t work Sept 13th & worked 1 ¼ on 9/11  Miner 
Sept 1-30  29 ¼ days @ 3.75 = 109/70  - 27.60 Board  = 82.10 Pay

 

October 1907 Barney listed now as Blacksmith
   Worked Oct 1  16 was off Oct 17-21 then worked Oct 22-31
Oct.  26 days @ $3.75 = 97.50  - 28.60 Board = 68.50 Pay

 

November 1907   Blacksmith 
Worked Nov 1-17 & ½ day on Nov 18
                        November  17 ½ days @ 3.75 = 65.62  - 18.00 Board  6.50 (H.Hyde) = 41.12 ½

December 1907   Barney now listed as Foreman  Worked Dec 7-31
25 days @ $5.00 =   ------keeper of the books must have changed hands.  There is no record of pay or deductions, only his time

     3 days @ $3.75 = 12.75  -4.22 Board = 8.53 Pay     ck 911  listed as Blacksmith

29 days @ $3.75 = 108.75  - 27.84 Board = 80.91

Worked March 1 - 19  & ½ day March 20
20 ½ days @ $3.75 = 76.87  -20.00 Board = 56.87

 

This is the final entry for Barney.  The books end in another couple of months.

The writing in this Record Book was usually quite easy to read, but there may have been some mistakes made in transcribing. I am sorry if a name is spelled incorrectly, but it may have been that way in the book.
