Notes for Jonathan Milks:
According to History and Genealogy of the Milk and Milks Family P.61-2, Jonathan was a child of Jonathan and Mercy (Trowbridge) Milks b. 1769; m (1) Sophronia Benson; m (2) Margaret English. According to a writeup on Jonathan on Page 167, the family removed to Cattaraugus Co. sometime around 1827 when he and Margaret sold land in Washington Co., NY. That is also when they purchased land from the Holland Land Company. The History of Cattaraugus Co., pub. 1893, has considerable info on Jonathan, since "Jonathan Milk was the first settler in the southern part of the Town of Dayton."
IBID, Milk and Milks Family, P.167-8
The children of Jonathan Milk were probably all born near Easton, Washington Co., NY, where he is shown in the 1810 census as having a wife under 26 years of age and 6 children, 3 boys and 3 girls. History of Cattaraugus Co., pub. 1893, lists his children as: "John, Benjamin, Jonathan, Prince W., Luke, Mary, Bathsheba, Sarah, and Deborah". Jonathan Milk m. (1) Sophronia Benson and probably only his two eldest children, Mary and John, were born of this union. (Mrs. Lucy Waite Watson, who lives near Cattaraugus, NY, has some silver teaspoons that belonged to Sophonia Benson.) Jonathan m. (2) Margaret English. The names of the parents of Margaret are not known, but she had brothers named George and Luke English and probably a married sister named Mary Green, as evidenced by a letter in possession of editor Grace Croft.
The 1850 census for Napoli, Cattaraugus Co., shows that Jonathan was born in Mass; and at the time of the census he was 81 years of age and was living with his son John. A letter written by his daughter Deborah in 1855 states: "Father is living with John and is well for a man his age". The home in which he passed his later years is located on one of the highest hills near Napoli, where the Clyde Benson family now resides. Jonathan lived a long and useful life, and as an affectionate grandfather was frequently called upon to recount early pioneer and war stories. Dade Milks (Harvey R.) remembered climbing upon his grandfather Jonathan's lap and begging for the story of the "small boy" in the Revolution (See P.61).

Notes for Adam Irving:
The following was contributed by Robie (4th)-Auld in 1955, at the age of 92. She died shortly after she wrote this, on July 18, 1955 in Clintonville, Wisconsin. Burial in Oaklawn Cemetery at West Union, Iowa.
SKETCH OF ADAM IRVING (2ND GENERATION)
Adam Irving, who was the 4th and youngest son of James and Ann (Cowan) Irving was born October 18, 1801 in Carlisle, England. He was christened in the Church of England (Episcopal). Harry Armstrong was his godfather. He attended city school until old enough to be useful in his father's tailor shop. During this time he attended night school. At age of 18 he joined the British Army and took his training at Aldershot. After receiving his training he was sent with his regiment to Ireland where he observed much dire and unforgettable poverty. Later his troop was sent to Canada, where he took "French Leave" and came to the United States. Luckily, he was never caught or I wouldn't be writing this.
He came down the coastal states to New Britian, Connecticut, where he met and married Robie English, my grandmother for whom I was named. Later they came to Burghamton, NY, where they raised their family of 6 children.
Adam Irving was possessed of great charm, good manners, and good looks. His wife died when the eldest, James was 14 or thereabouts, and the family became separated. Later he got them together and they all came West and finally to Iowa. Adam was well read and scholarly, but he never acquired wealth, nor did he leave an estate. I remember him at 65, vigorous and delightful, a good talker and always interesting.
Regarding Adam's three brothers: George, the eldest, was in the British Army in India and there held the highest rank of non-commissioned officer in the British Army. It was during the Battle of Waterloo, fighting under Lord Wellington, that he was wounded in the hip, thus ending his army career. He never came to the United States. James Jr. and John came to Jersey City in company with their parents and two sisters, Ann and Mary. Ann married a Mr. Mellor and had a large family. Mary married a Mr. Russell and their family and whereabouts became unknown. John married a girl whose first name was Isabel and they never had any children. James Jr remained a bachelor. He and John operated a tannery together.
James and Ann (Cowan) Irving lie buried in Trinity Church yard in Jersey City, New Jersey. Other than Adam I never heard that any of the rest came West, and only Adam had sons to carry on the name of Irving. (Robie Irving-Auld was the daughter of George, Granddaughter of Adam.

His father Adam Irving, was born in Carlisle, England and remained there until 16 years of age, when, as a soldier in the British army, he went to Canada, and on leaving Canada he removed to New York. There he was united in marriage to Robie English whose family tho of English lineage had been founded in America in very early days, her ancestors having crossed over on the Mayflower. Adam Irving was a tailor by trade and followed that pursuit throughout his active career. In the 1840's he removed to Illinois, settling near Belvidere, in Boone County, residing for a number of years and then went to Minnesota. He spend his last years with his sons in Boone County, Iowa and long survived his wife who died in New York in 1842.
Erastus Irving was reared to manhood in the county of his birth, and at the usual age entered public school, acquiring a good English education. For one year he engaged in teaching school in Benton County, Iowa. In 1854 he made his way westward, locating in Boone County, IL. There he rented land and carried on farming, and in that county was united in marriage to Nancy M. Burton, a native of Duchess County, NY and the daughter of John Burton who settled in Boone County, IL in the 1830's, being one of the first settlers there.
The young couple began their life on the rented farm which was their home of two years. In 1857 they came to Iowa and settled in Benton County. Soon afterward, however, Mr. Irving went to Minnesota where he remained until the fall of that year, then he again took up his abode in Benton County, where he engaged in teaching school during the winter of 1857-1858. In the spring of 1858 he again went to Minnesota where he engaged in farming through the summer and in the autumn returned to Boone County, IL. There he engaged in farming until 1865 when he once more sought a farm and home in Iowa, and during that year he raised a crop in Boone County, Iowa. In 1866 he purchased 90 acres of land on Section 1, Worth Township which was then raw prarie and which not a furrow had been turned or an improvement been made, but soon the track of the plow could be seen across the fields which were fenced and cultivated. After two years there, Mr. Irving sold that property and purchased 160 acres on Section 7 in Colfax Township. It was noted in this history that in 1854 a right Indiana farmer sent one Landman to Iowa to choose the best four sections of land he could find, the purpose of which was to build a model farm. The Landman chose sections 7-8-17-18 in Colfax Township, but he was slow in getting to the land office and when he did he found that nearly half of the four sections had been entered by other parties.
Records show that 14 years later, in 1868, Erastus Irving bought 160 acres, Section 7. Another indication of his good judgement. This he broke and improved. He planted a large orchard and a walnut grove, and developed a fine farm. Eventually he purchased joining property and became the owner of 240 acres of improved land. He planted a large grove on this later purchase also. He built a near, substantial residence and in the rear stood good barns and out buildings, furnishing shelter for stock and grains. This was one of the best improved farms in Colfax Township, and was an indication of the life of industry and enterprise that Mr. Irving led. The home of Erastus and Nancy was blessed with two children, George B. and Edna E.
Erastus Irving served his township as Justice of the Peace, discharging his duties with fairness and impartiality, and also held the office of Town Clerk. He also served as Delegate to numerous conventions of the Republican Party, and took a deep interest in its' growth and insuring its' success. His first Presidential ballot was cast for John Fremont in 1856, and he also voted for A. Lincoln and U. Grant, supporting the latter at his first election. He and his wife belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church, and took deep interest in the moral development of the community.
Mr. Irving was a citizen of worth who co-operated in many movements for the general good. His own life record is a creditable and honorable one and the success he achieved came to him as the direct result of his own energy and capable management. When he started out in life he had no influential friends to assist him and no inheritance to give him a start, but with strong purpose and laudable ambition he worked his way upward to the plane of affluence.

The youngest brother, George, came to Boone County in 1866 in company of Erastus and here followed farming for many years. At his death he left a family of four daughters and one son. He was married to Ann Whitbeck.
A very noticeable characteristic of all of the Irving men was their great admiration of trees. On every farm that they owned they planted large groves of shade trees and large orchards.
