John C. Travis - Member of the 137th New York Volunteers, Company A

Aug 9, 1862 to 9 June 1865 Comp A in 137th NY infantry

Mustered out 9 June 1865 at Bladensburg MD with his Co. John C. Travis enlisted at age 21. He fought with A Company on Culps Hill, Battle of Gettysburg as a Corporal. At the Battle of Peachtree Creek was wounded in the head and was sent to a military Hospital in Nashville for two months. Afterward, he returned to duty and was promoted to sargeant for bravery and efficency. He was with Sherman in his March to the Sea. He was mustered out with the 137th at the Wars end.

He returned to Vestal to continue Farming after the war and married Mary E. Grippen. He was active in the G.A.R. and died of TB in 1896. He had a brother Zebulon and 3 sisters, Cornelia, Polly and Julia.
