Sep.10th 1864 Brother Sharman(?)

When I left Hampton My arm was doing first rate. We left there the 5th of this month. was three days on the way. it was verry Stormy. the sea was so rough my wound could not be dressed (?) the surgeon on the boat examined it said it would have to be taken off.

I arrived here about 5 P.M. the 8th Wher i got something fit to eat. the first I had been since I left Hampton. Dry bread and poor coffee was all we got on the boat,The surgeon here said he would try and save my arm. I was put under the influence of chloroform.and had it well dressed. Gangrene had got in the wound. it sented (?) verry badly. Today it is much better and they think it can be saved. I have the verry bestof care, and all I want to eat, and that of the best kind. I feel greatly incouraged and think I shall come out all right.

Write soon, and give my love to all
