1 CA Whittlesey (Mr.) Paymaster; using the celebrated adage “The public is an old goose, and he is a fool who will not pluck a feather when he has the opportunity,” he absconded with $30,000 entrusted to him to pay the militia; spread the word he had been robbed but was overheard talking about the money with his wife; threatened with death, he told where the money was hidden; authorities found it all nicely quilted into a pair of ladies “drawers” to be worn by Mrs. Whittlesey on a planned trip to CT the next day; his wife then committed suicide by jumping into the river and drowning. 1815-07-29
