History of Grant County

Grant County was created 14 Oct 1864 from Wasco and Umatilla Counties. It was named for General Ulysses S. Grant, who at this time was at the height of his fame as a military leader for the United States Union Army. Included in its 4497 square miles are the Umatilla National Forest, the Malheur National Forest, part of the Whitman National Forest, the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, and the North Fork John Day Wilderness Area.
