DESSESART, DURIEUX, GRADENIGO, ROWE posted by Linda Alexander Email: twinkle1@erols.com on Sunday, February 8, 1998

Looking for info on DESSESART/GRADENIGO/ROWE. My g-g grandmother was Allecia DESESSART. In the 1860 census, town of Opelousas, St. Landry parish, Allecia, about 13, lived w/Malite GRADNEGGO. Malite, approximately 36, had 2 other children living w/her--Charles (6) & Alcibius (sp?) (5) Perrault. Allecia is listed in no formal genealogical accounts of the DESESSARTs that I've found-- city, church, other. The DESSESART name dates back to Langres, France. From there, they went to St Dominique & raised sugar cane, then immigrated to LA, coming in thru Baton Rouge, New Orleans, & finally, southern LA. Allecia was mulatto, yet she's listed as both white & mulatto, depending on the census. I think her mother was Melitte (Malite) GRADENIGO (GRADNEGGO), a naturalized mulatto woman, unmarried in 1860. If she was Allecia's mother, Allecia was likely illegitimate & one of the DESSESARTs was her father--& I believe it was Hilaire. Allecia was apparently very lightskinned, and went on to live as a white woman in later years. Her children, in subsequent census', are all listed as white. She even married (common law, possibly), a white man from MS, & had 8 children. He married her after he served time as a Captain in the Confederacy, was held as a prisoner of war, &, in later years, claimed to never have married nor fathered any children. Any help will be appreciated.
