Records of Grace Episcopal Church, Georgetown

LDS Film # 0845776 - Records of Marriages, Baptisms, Burials, & Communicants 1863 - 1894 Compiled by the DAR

"It was about the year 1855 that three vestrymen of St. John's Church started a mission on "Brickyard Hill" on the canal in the heart of what was then known as Peter's Square. When the work had proved its value, the Rev. Henderson Suter took charge of the mission and organized a Sunday school.

A small frame chapel was first erected on the spot where the present granite cross in memory of the soldiers of the world war now stands. In 1866 the church was made a separate parish, known as Grace Parish. The beautiful building was built by Henry D. Cooke, Gov. of DC. It was finished in time for a service on Easter Day 1867."
