Edgar Honea  (September 13, 1949, Page - 1)
DeRidder, Sept. 12. - A series of arguments between two families ended near here tonight in a blaze of gunfire which left
Edgar Honea, about 30, dead of shotgun wounds and a neighbor in the parish jail. Sheriff Paul Stark said Honea was shot through the heart with a .12 gauge shotgun by Harold Austin about 6:40 p.m. at Austin's home on the Lake Charles- DeRidder Highway.
Austin was held in the Beauregard jail here and Sheriff Stark said charges will probably be filed Tuesday.
After an inquest by Dr. S.T. Roberts, Sr., Beauregard Parish Coroner, Stark gave this account of the fatal shooting.
The two families have been at odds for sometime, and today Honea went next door and stood just outside Austin's
front yard, yelling for him to come outside to "settle this."
Austin, seeing who it was, went back for his gun, walked to the corner of his yard and shot Honea, Stark continued.
At the inquest, Dr. Roberts ruled that Honea "came to his death by a shot fired by Harold Austin." Honea was not armed, Dr. Roberts said. After the shooting, the Sheriff said Austin gave himself up. The two families live side by side just off the north side of the DeRidder-Lake Charles Highway.
Honea is survived by his widow and two children. Funeral services, in charge of Hixson's funeral home, are incomplete.
